What you can do: Use the hosted web app at findingunison.com, free of charge, for any personal, clinical, or research purpose.
What requires permission: Without prior written permission from the copyright holder, you may not copy or redistribute this source code in whole or in part, modify it or create derivative works from it, sublicense or sell it, host or deploy a copy of this application under this name or any other, or use it as training data for a machine learning model.
Disclaimer
Uncalibrated. Volume levels are relative to the full volume output by your system, not in absolute dB, so this tool can't measure hearing thresholds. Comparisons only hold across sessions with identical headphones and system volume.
This site supplements, and does not replace, clinical audiometry. This is not medical advice. If you're experiencing new or worsening hearing symptoms, contact a healthcare professional promptly.
No warranty. This software is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. It is not a medical device and does not produce clinically calibrated measurements. Use at your own risk.
Privacy
The parameters you enter to use this tool (pitches, volume levels, mode settings, and so on) and any data you record stay on your device. None of it is ever sent anywhere: no account, no tracking, no analytics.
Separately, and true of any website: requests to this page pass through the infrastructure that hosts and serves it (Cloudflare). Like any web server, it logs the basic connection details every page load has, things like IP address, browser, and timestamp. That's ordinary hosting-level activity, not something this site adds, collects, or uses on its own, and it has nothing to do with the tool's own data described above.
Ads. I reserve the right to change if and how ads show up on this page over time. At any given moment, one of the following is true:
- There may be no ads at all. The current default.
- There may be a directly-sold sponsor placement: a single image I've picked and host myself, loaded with no cookies and no referrer. The sponsor's server sees only an ordinary image-request footprint (IP address, browser, timestamp), nothing that identifies you or where you've been.
- There may be a placement card from a curated ad network, for example Carbon Ads, one that targets by the page's content rather than by tracking visitors across the web. Any network used here is chosen on one condition: it doesn't build a cross-site profile of you. If it sets a cookie at all, it's for something narrow like frequency capping or fraud prevention, not personalized tracking.
Whichever of these is running, it's cosmetic to the page. It has no access to what you measure or record, which stays on your device no matter what, full stop.
